About
I am trained as a rhetorician, but a cursory glance at my CV will demonstrate that I have a variety of research interests. Even so, I am mainly interested in how we make sense of the world. There are two kinds of reality – that which is empirically verifiable and that which is socially constructed. The former is the realm of science, while the latter is the realm of rhetoric. Because I am one of the few who possess a B.S. in Speech Communication (I was a former math major), I enjoy both forms of reality, but it is the socially constructed one that continues to hold my attention.
I am currently working on a book project exploring the political uses of the disrobed body. I also continue to explore the nature of media and technology and their influence on our lives.
I currently serve as the Chair of the Human Communication and Technology Division of the National Communication Association, the Vice-Chair of the Freedom of Speech Division of the Southern States Communication Association, and the Vice President of the Alabama Communication Association.
